Make Rahul as captain instead of Rohit Sharma: Kohli and Sunil Gavaskar

Virat Kohli recently announced that he will retire from the Indian T20I captain after the T20 World Cup in 2021. The India captain suggested that since vice-captain Rohit Sharma is 34 years old, he should be removed from his post and someone younger in both formats should take over.

He wanted the vice-captaincy of the one-day match to be handed over to KL Rahul, while Rishabh Pant takes over in the T20Is. Despite announcing that he would relinquish the T20I captaincy after the ICC meeting, Kohli insisted he would remain captain in the other two formats.

However, new reports indicate that his captaincy in the ODI format is no longer secure, especially after his alleged proposals. It is also said that Kohli went to the selection committee with a shocking proposal.

Legendary India batsman Sunil Gavaskar has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to groom KL Rahul as the next India captain. Gavaskar wants KL Rahul to be appointed as India’s T20 vice-captain, with Rohit Sharma set to take over as the role of captain after Virat Kohli decided to quit the captaincy after the T20 World Cup.

“It’s a good thing that the BCCI is looking ahead. It’s important to think ahead,” said Sunil Gavaskar on Sports Tak. “If India are looking to groom a new captain, then KL Rahul can be looked at. He has performed well. Even now in England, his batting was very good. He has been performing well in IPL and 50-overs cricket as well at the international stage. He can be made vice-captain,” added Gavaskar.

Gavaskar heaped praise on the stylish Karnataka batsman for his quality of leadership shown in the IPL. Rahul is the captain of Punjab Kings in the IPL. “He has shown very impressive leadership qualities in the IPL. He hasn’t let the burden of captaincy affect his batting. His name can be taken into consideration,” said Gavaskar.
