Los Angeles Olympics 2028: IOC given green signal to include cricket
The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last week approved the inclusion of the sport in a proposal by organizers of the Los Angeles Games. Apart from T20 cricket format between men's and women's teams, four other sports include baseball-softball, flag football, lacrosse and squash.
T20 cricket has officially been added to the Los Angeles Olympics 2028, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voting on Monday to add men’s and women’s events to the roster of the LA Games.
The Declaration is special for several reasons. This was done during the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 which India is hosting and it was done during the 141st IOC session in Mumbai, marking the return of the prestigious event to India after a gap of 40 years.

IOC President Thomas Bach said last week that adding cricket and four other sports only to the Los Angeles Games in 2028 was in keeping with American sports culture and applauded the Olympic movement for engaging with new athlete and fan communities.
“We are seeing the popularity of cricket, especially the T20 format. The World Cup (50 overs) has already been a huge success,” Bach said at a media interaction after the conclusion of the two-day Executive Council meeting on October 13.

A minor form of cricket along with baseball-softball, lacrosse, squash and flag football are the only five sports sanctioned for the Los Angeles Games in 2028. Cricket will be a part of Olympics for the first time since 1900.
