Little Grand master India’s R Praggnanandhaa beat World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen

Praggnanandhaa R, 16 year old prodigious Indian Chess talent has defeated current World champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway in Melt water tournament yesterday.He is only the 3rd Indian to defeat Magnus in a tournament game after Vishvanathan Anand ( India no.1 ) and Pendyala Harikrishna ( India No.3 ) .Little Grand master India’s R Praggnanandhaa beat World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen.

Coming from a lower middle-class family and with one of his parents being polio handicapped, it is an inspirational journey of him to reach this far. He is considered as next world champion in making by many people. Infact Vladimir Kramnik (former world champion) thinks Praggnanandhaa is already playing like a world champion!

Praggnanandhaa’s elder sister Vaishali is also a very capable player (IM and Women Grand Master) who has already won world Championships in Under 12 years and Under 14 years girls’ section. Currently aged 21 years, she is already India no.4 among seniors (women’s section).

Praggnanandhaa won with black pieces to end Carlsen’s 3-match winning run at the Airthings Masters in just 19 moves in a Tarrasch variation game. The Indian GM lies in joint 12th spot after eight rounds with eight points. His spectacular win over Carlsen comes after a moderate run in the earlier rounds, which included a solitary victory over Lev Aronian, two draws and four defeats.

In the Airthings Masters, a 16-player online rapid tournament, a player gets three points for a win and one for a draw in the preliminary rounds. Seven more rounds remain in the preliminary phase. Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa born 10 August 2005 is an Indian chess grandmaster.

A chess prodigy, he is the fifth-youngest person ever to achieve the title of Grandmaster, behind Abhimanyu Mishra, Sergey Karjakin, Gukesh D and Javokhir Sindarov. He is the younger sibling of Vaishali Rameshbabu. Praggnanandhaa won the World Youth Chess Championships Under-8 title in 2013, earning him the title of FIDE Master at the age of 7. He won the Under-10 title in 2015.
