Asia Cup 2021 Cancelled Due to Rising COVID-19 Cases in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Cricket chief executive Ashley de Silva has reportedly confirmed that the 2021 edition of the Asia Cup has been called off in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis across several participating nations.

The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has once again brought everything to a standstill. Due to the devastation caused by the recent COVID-19 surge, the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the sixth season of Pakistan Super League (PSL) were suspended indefinitely earlier this year.

In the aftermath of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the host nation of this season’s Asia Cup has called off the T20I tournament which was supposed to be contested between India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Malaysia. Speaking to reporters regarding the fate of the Asian tournament, Sri Lanka Cricket chief executive De Silva revealed that Sri Lanka will not be organising the Asia Cup 2021 in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.

“Due to the prevailing situation, it will not be possible to play the tournament in June this year,” De Silva was quoted as saying by news agency AFP.   Due to the destruction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, several nations have also banned flights from the region.
