Karnataka Election 2023: Good news to government and private sector employees

Bengaluru: In the election order, daily wage earners and general laborers and all voters working outside their assembly constituency are eligible for paid leave. The Central Election Commission (ECI) has instructed all government and private sector employees of the state to be given leave with pay on May 10, the polling day of the Karnataka assembly elections. On March 31, the ECI directed the Karnataka State Chief Secretary and the State Election Officer to grant leave with pay under Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. According to Section 135B, every person entitled to vote in an election to the State Assembly, employed in any trade, industry, industry or any other establishment, shall be given leave on polling day.

This rule applies to all categories of employees including those working in all Government, Public Sector Undertakings, Banks, Financial Institutions and Private Enterprises. The Commission said that action can be taken against the employees if they are not given leave on the polling day.

In the election order, daily wage earners and general labourer and all voters working outside their assembly constituency are eligible for paid leave. However, this shall not apply to any voter whose absence in relation to the enterprise or organization is liable to cause danger or heavy loss.

Also, in recent years, if polling day falls on a Monday or Friday, instead of taking a day off and voting, people are leaving the city with a week off. We have observed this closely. Central Election Commission Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said that since the polling day is scheduled for Wednesday, it will be difficult for people to get two days off.
