New Delhi: The central government has extended the ban on sugar export till October 31, 2023 . It is said that the government has taken this step to increase the availability of sugar in the domestic market and prevent price rise. Sugar Export Ban Extended for One Year; Here is the details.

Earlier, the Center had imposed restrictions on sugar exports till October 31 this year. In the previous notification, the government had said that this action was taken to prevent price rise in the domestic market.

The ban on export of sugar (raw, refined and white sugar) has been extended till 31 October 2023 or until further orders. Other conditions will continue as they are now,” the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) notification said.

Can export to Europe, America

The notification also mentions that these restrictions will not apply to exports to the European Union, America, which come under CLQ and TRQ (Tariff Rate Quota) tax exemption quota.

India is the largest producer of sugar in the world and the second largest exporter. Exporting to restricted list countries requires permission from the government.

Expected production of 3.65 crore tonnes

During the 2022-23 marketing season, the country is expected to produce 3.65 crore tonnes of sugar. It has increased by 2 percent compared to the previous year, said the ‘Indian Sugar Mills Association’.

India’s sugar production during October-September 2021-22 was 3.58 crore tonnes. The association estimates that despite the demand for ethanol production, 90 lakh tonnes of sugar can be exported this time.

In January, the ‘Indian Sugar Mills Association’ released a first estimate report that despite 45 lakh tonnes of sugarcane of the total production being spent on sugarcane milk/syrup and ethanol, 3.65 crore tonnes of sugar is expected to be produced in 2022-23.

The government is continuously monitoring the situation related to sugar production sector including production, consumption, export, price trends in wholesale and retail markets across the country. It was on its own initiative that the restriction on exports was extended.
