Mumbai Heavy Rainfall: The downpour in parts of Maharashtra is likely to continue on Friday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red alert’ on Thursday for the districts of Thane, Raigad, Pune, and Palghar, anticipating heavy to very heavy rainfall. Additionally, an ‘orange alert’ has been issued for Mumbai and Ratnagiri districts. Authorities have declared a holiday for schools on Friday and Saturday in Palghar and Thane due to the red alert issued by the IMD.

As heavy rains lash Mumbai and its suburbs, local train services between Badlapur and Ambarnath halted to a stop in Thane after there were reports of waterlogging on the railway tracks.

As of 8:30 am on Wednesday, all Central and Western Railway local trains in Mumbai were running normally. However, train services on the Panvel-Belapur Harbour Line route were affected to a “point failure” at Panvel at 9:40 am, Central Railway’s chief public relations officer Shivraj Manaspure said.

The Badlapur-Ambernath railway tracks are also closed due to severe waterlogging, the Central Railway CRPO said. The rail tracks got inundated with water around 10:30 am. As per IMD bulletin yesterday, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to continue over Mumbai during next two days.

Isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely over Konkan & Goa, ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat state on 20th and 21st July. As per a civic official, the island city received an average 100 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ending on 8 am on Thursday. The Tulsi lake, which is one of the seven reservoirs supplying drinking water to the city overflowed on Thursday following heavy rains in the city and suburbs, civic official said.

Earlier this month, the Powai lake, another reservoir located in the heart of Mumbai, started overflowing, but its water is not used for drinking purpose. This is expected to bring relief to citizens facing 10 per cent water cut since the beginning of this month. The eastern suburbs and western suburb reported average rainfall of 21.51 millimetres, 23.87 mm, and 21.83 mm, respectively, in the 10-hour period between 8am and 6pm on Thursday.
