India Reports nearly 2.5 lakh Covid-19 cases and 481 death in single day

India reported 2,47,417 new Covid-19 infections on Thursday, 27.1 per cent higher than yesterday, according to data shared by the Union Health Ministry. This brings the country’s cumulative caseload to 3,63,17,927. Of this, 5,488 cases were of the highly transmissible Omicron variant of coronavirus.

Total recoveries were at 3,47,15,361 across the country. A total of 84,825 patients recovered in the last 24 hours. The recovery rate is now at 95.59 per cent. India’s active caseload stands at 11,17,531. In the last 24 hours, active cases increased by 1,62,212. The daily positivity rate stood at 13.11 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was 10.80 per cent.

Among all the states, Maharashtra reported the highest Covid-19 cases at 46,723 cases, followed by Delhi with 27,561 cases, West Bengal with 22,155 cases, Karnataka with 21,390 cases and Tamil Nadu with 17,934 cases. These five states accounted for 54.87 per cent of the daily new cases reported on Sunday, Maharashtra alone responsible for 18.88 per cent of the new cases.

In the last 24 hours, 481 people succumbed to Covid-19, increasing the total reported death count to 4,84,859. Maximum casualties were reported in Kerala (300), followed by Delhi with 40 daily deaths. India conducted 18,86,935 tests during the previous day, according to the Health Ministry data.

A total of 76,32,024 vaccine doses were administered in the last 24 hours, which brings the total tally of doses administered to 1,54,61,39,465.  

Amid surging Covid cases following the emergence of Omicron variant, PM Modi call emergency meeting with all CM today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the Chief Ministers of all states on Thursday at 4:30 pm via video conferencing on the COVID situation.

This is the first meeting of the Prime Minister with the Chief Ministers of all states this year. PM Modi has held several meetings with chief ministers last year. Earlier on Wednesday, Dr VK Paul, a NITI Aayog member, has also cautioned that the infection caused by the Omicron variant of coronavirus should not be considered common cold and people should not take it lightly.
