Assam government is making a new law to ban polygamy. The Assam government has banned its employees from marrying another spouse if their spouse is alive, warning of penal action if they indulge in bigamy.

In Assam state government, which had waged war against child marriage, has now imposed many conditions for the 2nd marriage. The government has announced that if a person of any religion is in a government job, if he wants to get married for the second time, he should get the permission of the state government.

The Himant Biswa Sarma government has been working hard to curb polygamy and child marriage since the past. Now the government is making a new law to ban polygamy. The Assam government has banned its employees from marrying another spouse if their spouse is alive, warning of penal action if they indulge in bigamy.

Govt permission is mandatory for 2nd marriage:

Speaking about this, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government employees who want to get married for the second time even if their wife is still alive should get permission from the government. In the case of the death of a government employee, both the husband and wife get into a dispute over the pension amount. Hence it is clarified that these orders will be strictly enforced.

In this regard, the personnel department office has released a memorandum. It has been clarified that even if it is a divorce, no government employee can marry a second time while his wife is alive, and in such cases, if a second marriage is to be done, the permission of the government should be obtained first. It has warned that strict action will be taken against government employees who marry for the second time while their wives are still alive.

Female employees cannot marry married men:

According to Rule 26 of the Assam Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1965, no employee whose wife is alive shall remarry without first obtaining the permission of the Government. Assam CS Neeraj Verma in his order said that no female government employee should marry a man who already has a wife without the permission of the government.
Warning of heavy fines:

The government has warned the employees that in case of violation of these rules, action will be taken including compulsory retirement and imposition of fine. The order said that if the government employees do this, it will have a big impact on the society.

Assam government employees are ineligible for second marriage (while the spouse is still alive), although some religions allow it, but they have to take prior permission from the government, the CM said.
