Eligible citizens must ensure that their names are enrolled in the electoral roll to exercise their right to vote in India’s democratic process. To simplify and streamline the voter registration process, the Election Commission of India has introduced an online facility that enables citizens to apply for voter registration conveniently from the comfort of their homes.
It is important to understand that having a Voter ID card and having your name included in the electoral roll are two different things. During elections, a person can cast their vote only if their name is registered in the voter list.
Any Indian citizen who has completed 18 years of age and is not legally disqualified under any election law is eligible to register as a new voter. The Election Commission has introduced four qualifying dates every year — January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1 — allowing young citizens who turn 18 to apply for voter registration without waiting for the next election cycle.
Before applying for a new voter registration, applicants should first check whether their name already exists in the electoral roll. If a person needs to make corrections in their name, address, or other details, they must submit Form 8 instead of applying for a new voter ID.
Required Documents for New Voter Registration:
For new voter registration, citizens need to submit Form 6 through the online portal. Applicants should keep the following documents ready:
Recent passport-size photograph
Age proof such as birth certificate, Aadhaar card, passport, or SSLC marks card
Address proof such as electricity bill, water bill, passport, or Aadhaar card
To apply online, citizens must visit the official Voter Service Portal of the Election Commission of India (voters.eci.gov.in). After logging in, applicants need to select Form 6, enter their personal details, upload the required documents, and submit the application.
Once the application is submitted, a Reference Number will be generated. Applicants should save this number carefully, as it can be used to track the status of their application.
Indian citizens living abroad can register themselves as overseas electors by submitting Form 6A separately.
Application Verification and Status Tracking:
Submitting the application does not mean that the registration process is completed immediately. Election officials will verify the details provided by the applicant before approving the registration.
Applicants can track their application status online by entering their Reference Number on the voter service portal. If there is any delay or issue with the application process, citizens can contact the Election Commission’s toll-free helpline number 1950 for assistance.
After the application is approved and the applicant’s name is added to the electoral roll, they can download the digital version of their voter card, known as e-EPIC (Electronic Electoral Photo Identity Card), from the official portal.
With the online registration facility, obtaining a voter ID has become easier, faster, and more accessible, enabling eligible citizens across the country to exercise their right to vote.
