Jantar Mantar, one of Delhi’s most prominent protest locations, will no longer be available for demonstrations. Instead, the Delhi Police has identified three new locations for organising protests and public gatherings — Ramlila Maidan, Burari Maidan, and the CBD Maidan in East Delhi.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a new order designating these three alternative locations for protests and demonstrations in Delhi, citing reasons such as maintaining public order, ensuring smooth traffic movement, and addressing security concerns.

According to the order issued on October 11, 2026, the decision was taken based on recommendations made by a committee constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The committee was tasked with identifying suitable alternative locations for citizens to hold protests while ensuring that the democratic right to peaceful demonstrations was protected.

However, the announcement of new protest sites does not mean that demonstrations will receive automatic permission. Organisers will still have to follow the applicable police regulations and complete the required permission process. Earlier too, protests at Jantar Mantar required prior approval from authorities.

Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar has signed the official order, which partially modifies the earlier Standing Order issued on April 28, 2022.

Three New Protest Locations Identified:

Ramlila Maidan:

Located in central Delhi, this historic ground has been a venue for large-scale rallies, political gatherings, and public meetings.

Burari Maidan / Nirankari Maidan:

A large open area in North Delhi, which was also used during the farmers’ protest movement.

CBD Maidan:

The Central Business District ground near Karkardooma in East Delhi has been included as another designated protest venue.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had formed a high-level committee to examine alternative protest locations due to concerns over repeated demonstrations in central Delhi causing inconvenience to the public, disruption for people accessing hospitals, and security challenges around Parliament House.

Based on the committee’s recommendations, Jantar Mantar has now been removed from the list of approved protest locations.
