Cyclone Biparjoy: IMD issues very severe storm warning

Cyclone ‘Biparjoy,’ which was last recorded over the east-central and southeast Arabian Sea, is expected to shift northwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. IMD latest bulletin issued at 5:30 am on Wednesday, the IMD warned of consequent harsh weather and sea conditions, with wind speeds potentially reaching 135-145 kmph, and gusting up to 160 kmph over the next three to four days.

The IMD has also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea. The cyclonic storm over the east-central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea remained at a stagnant location for three hours. At 2:30 am it was around 900 km west-southwest of Goa, 1020 km southwest of Mumbai, 1090 km south-southwest of Porbandar and 1380 km south of Karachi.

IMD has issued a warning for fishermen to not to venture into the sea till June 10. Those who are out on sea, are advised to return to the coast. Fishermen should not venture into the central and adjoining areas of the south Arabian Sea from 7th-9 th June.

Cyclone Biparjoy effect in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala to experience high-speed wind. In the wake of the advancing cyclone, IMD has issued a wind warning for the next five days for states southwestern states.

7th June: Gale wind can reach a speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph is likely to prevail over east-central Arabian Sea and adjoining areas of west-central & southeast Arabian Sea. It can grow strong to become 95-105 kmph gusting to 115 kmph from the evening of 7th June over the same area.

Adjoining areas of the westcentral and south Arabian Sea and along and off north Kerala-Karnataka-Goa coasts will also experience strong wind and rough sea conditions. On 8th June wind speed can reach 115-125 kmph gusting to 140 kmph from the evening. Areas located in Karnataka, Goa-Maharashtra coasts to experience strong winds.

9th June: Wind speed can increase to become 135-145 kmph gusting to 160 kmph from the evening. Adjoining areas of the South Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Goa- Maharashtra coasts to experience harsh weather and rough sea conditions.

10th June: Gale wind speed reaching 145-155 kmph gusting to 170 kmph over central Arabian Sea. Adjoining areas of the south Arabian Sea and along & off the north Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra coasts will also remain affected.
