BIG News: Birth certificate mandatory for all government work from October 1

The new amended law facilitates the use of birth certificate as a single document for several jobs and services like admission to educational institutions, issuance of driving license, applying for Aadhaar card or passport and marriage registration. It is said that the amended law will come into effect from October 1.

Parliament had passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023 in the last monsoon session. Now President Draupadi Murmu has agreed to this on August 11. “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 2023 (20 of 2023), the Central Government hereby appoints the 1st day of October, 2023.

The date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force ” said the notification issued by Registrar General and Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan. Further, revision of voter list will be automated by linking birth/death information with voter list. The Election Commission will instruct any person to get a voter ID card before reaching the age of 18 years.

Similarly, if any person dies, the Election Commission itself will delete that person’s name from the voter list. But before this the matter of death has to be confirmed to the family members of the person within 15 days. Registration of Births and Deaths Amendment allows the use of Birth Certificate as a single document for several purposes such as admission to a legal institution, issuance of driving license, preparation of voter list, Aadhaar number, marriage registration or recruitment to government jobs.

Birth Certificate link to voter list help to get automatic information from Election Commsion to make Voter ID when candidate turn age of 18. Similarly, if any person dies, the Election Commission itself will delete that person’s name from the voter list. But before this, the person’s family members have to confirm the matter of death within 15 days.
