Today is International Friends Day. But Friends Day is not celebrated in India today. First Sunday of August i.e., celebrated on 7th August this year. Friendship is a melodious relationship. A strong belief that whatever problem we have, our friends have a solution for it. Our friends are with us like our family in happiness, sorrow, joy and pain. International Friends Day is celebrated on 30th July every year to highlight the importance of good relationship called friendship. The bond of friendship is pure in nature and not blood relation but it is full of love. This day is celebrated to celebrate the strong bond of friendship and the importance of love irrespective of caste, colour, race, culture.

When is International Friends Day celebrated in India?

Friends Day is celebrated all over the world every year. The United Nations has officially declared July 30 as “International Friends Day”. The first Sunday of August is celebrated as Friends Day in India. This year, August 7, 2022 will be celebrated as Friends Day. On that day, friends tie a friendship band on each other’s hand and promise that we will be best friends forever.

First International Friends Day

International Friends Day was first celebrated on July 30 in 1958 in Paraguay. National Friendship Day emerged as a marketing strategy for Hallmark cards in the 1930s. Its founder was Joyce Hall. The marketing strategy of giving importance to the people closest to you and sending them a card to let them know you’re thinking of them, led to the creation of an official holiday in 1935 by the US Congress. Then Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho started celebrating World Day on July 20, 1958. Later in 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared 30th July as the International Day of Friendship. But even after the declaration of the United Nations, in some countries it is celebrated in different months and on different days.

International Friendship Day is celebrated on first Sunday of August only in India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, UAE, US. Celebrated on July 30 in Nepal, April 9 in Berlin, Orbalio, Ohio. International Friendship Day is celebrated on July 20 in Brazil, while Argentina and Mexico celebrate it on July 14.

How to celebrate Friends Day ?

In many countries including Asia, Argentina, Peru, India, Finland, Estonia, Brazil, UAE, US, International Friendship Day is celebrated by greeting friends, exchanging gifts, tying friendship bands on the hands of friends, devoting precious time to them.

Significance of International Friends Day

In “A Theory of Human Motivation” written in Psychological Review in 1943, Abraham Maslow proposed that a human need is love. He used terms such as physiological, safety, love, social needs and self-actualization through a pyramid diagram to understand human behavior and motivation. According to Maslow’s theories, social and interpersonal relationships are essential for human needs. Humans must love all to stay alive and perform their duties. Absence of this element can hinder basic functions. This makes people feel lonely, anxious and depressed. Everyone should be friendly for that.

Purpose of International Friends Day celebration

The main objective of the International Friends Day celebration is that if there is friendship between people, bonds between communities will grow. International Friendship Day is celebrated every year with the aim of promoting good relations between all the countries of the world and inspiring world peace.
