Xi Jinping elected as president of China for third consecutive term

Beijing: 69-year-old Xi Jinping has been re-elected for the 3rd consecutive time as the President of China. Xi Jinping was elected general secretary of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at the first plenary meeting of the committee, Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday. 203 members and 168 alternate members of the 20th CPC Central Committee attended the session chaired by Xi Jinping. Xi Jinping was also named chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission at the session.

Addressing the media after his election, President Xi Jinping said ironically that ‘China cannot develop without the world, the world needs China too’. Xi Jinping has brought many of his trusted characters to high positions in the party on this occasion.

Xi Jinping is credited with being the most influential and longest-serving Chinese president since Mao Zedong in modern Chinese history. China cannot progress without the world, and the world needs China. China has achieved two wonders through 40 consecutive years of reform and free economy efforts. China is a model of rapid economic progress and long-term social stability,’ he said.

Li Qiang, the former chairman of the party’s Shanghai unit, has been made the new prime minister in Xi Jinping’s new team . Xi Jinping thanked the CPC for reposing their trust in him. He said the country has achieved the goal of establishing a ‘prosperous society’.
