The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) on Friday withdrew its call for celebrating Cow Hug Day on February 14. As per the directives of the Competent Authority and the Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry, the Animal Welfare Board of India called for  Cow Hug Day celebration has been withdrawn.

On February 8, AWBI called the people of the country to celebrate Cow Hug Day on February 14, which is celebrated as Valentine’s Day worldwide. The Animal Welfare Council of India said that hugging a cow is an emotional enrichment that increases personal and collective happiness.

Speaking about this, AWBI Secretary SK Dutta said that cow is the backbone of Indian culture and rural economy and represents life preservation, livestock wealth and biodiversity. A request was made to celebrate Cow hug Day on the directives of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.

A cow is called Kamadhenu and Gomathe because of its motherly nurturing qualities, the giver of all, the richness of humanity. Vedic traditions are almost on the verge of extinction due to the advancement of western culture. The fascination of Western civilization has almost made us forget our material culture and heritage. Therefore, on February 8, SK Dutta officially requested that February 14 be celebrated as Cow Hug Day. However, that plea has now been withdrawn.

There was opposition from the opposition Party

There was also opposition to the Cow hug Day called by AWBI. Santunu Sen, TMC Rajya Sabha MP from Bengal, has called for Cow Hug Day celebrations to divert people’s attention from important issues. He called it fake Hinduism and fake patriotism. Also, CPI(M) leader Elmaram Karim had also slammed Cow Hug Day as a ridiculous concept and a disgrace to the country.

I am from farming community, not just one day I hug my cow every day. Congress’s Rajani Patil said it was only to divert attention from issues like unemployment and inflation. The same sentiment was expressed by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut.
