Answering question from JDS member Govindaraju about this in the Legislative Council question-and-answer session, Excise Minister Gopaliah said that objections have been submitted to the revised notification by reducing the age of purchase of liquor from 21 to 18 years, and the existing system will continue.

He said that in the background of public opposition to the proposal to reduce the age limit for purchasing liquor from 21 to 18 (Liquor Policy), it has been decided to continue as it is now. The state government has decided to relax the age limit for buying liquor. A draft notification in this regard was issued on January 10, and time was given for objections from the public.

In 2015, the Karnataka Excise Department amended the minimum drinking age from 18 to 21 years. But now again the Karnataka Excise Department has come forward to amend. If the government approves the draft notification, those who have completed the age of 18 years can freely go to the liquor shops and buy and consume liquor. But in the wake of widespread criticism in the public sector, the draft notification was withdrawn.
