Howrah Violence: Prohibition extended till April 3rd; Internet services suspended

West Bengal: Section 144 was implemented in some areas in the wake of the violence that took place in Howrah, West Bengal on the occasion of Ram Navami. The situation in Kajipara area of Howrah district is calm and under control. Shops and markets opened amid heavy police deployment in the area, the official said. West Bengal BJP Lok Sabha MP Jagannath Sarkar on Saturday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah seeking the intervention of central forces to stop the violence in Howrah. In addition, he demanded that the NIA should take over the investigation of the riots.

A clash broke out between two groups in Howrah town during Ram Navami Procession on Thursday. Many shops were vandalized during the violence. Many cars, including some police vehicles, were set on fire. This caused a lot of damage.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP and other right-wing organizations of being behind the violence in Howrah’s Kazipara. The BJP has denied Banerjee’s allegations and instead demanded an NIA probe into the matter.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday spoke to West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose about the violence during the Ram Navami procession in Howrah and reviewed the situation. Amit Shah also spoke to BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar in this regards.
