Transgender community sets example with mass marriages for poor in Raichur

Raichur : In an inspiring act of compassion and social responsibility, a group of transgender individuals has been drawing attention for organising mass marriages for underprivileged couples using money collected through daily begging.
Led by Jamunamma, the group has been conducting this unique initiative for the past six years. The latest event was held at the premises of Durga Devi temple in Eje Hosahalli village on the outskirts of Sindhanur taluk, where several poor couples were united in marriage.
Unlike large-scale mass wedding events sponsored by politicians or organisations, this initiative stands out because it is entirely funded by the hard-earned money collected by the transgender community. Members of the group pool their daily earnings and dedicate a portion of it every year to organise the ceremony.
The event was conducted in a traditional manner, ensuring that all necessary arrangements were made for the couples. From providing mangalsutra, toe rings, and essential wedding items to arranging food for guests, the organisers took care of every detail. Families of the brides and grooms, along with villagers and local dignitaries, attended the ceremony and blessed the newlyweds.
Speaking on the occasion, community member Madhushree said that the initiative is aimed at helping poor families who struggle to meet the financial burden of marriage. “We save money from our daily earnings and use it for this purpose every year. It gives us immense satisfaction to see these couples start a new life,” she said.
She further added that the group considers Durga Devi as their guiding force and seeks blessings for the well-being of all. “We pray that the couples who get married through our efforts lead happy and prosperous lives. If we receive more support and strength from God, we plan to organise this event on a larger scale in the future,” she noted.
The initiative has earned widespread appreciation from locals, who lauded the group for their generosity and commitment to social welfare. Many attendees said the effort reflects that humanity and kindness still thrive in society, regardless of economic or social status.
At a time when discussions around inclusion and dignity for transgender individuals continue, this initiative sends a powerful message about their role as active contributors to society. By turning their modest earnings into meaningful support for others, the group has set a remarkable example of empathy and collective responsibility.
