Siddaramaiah Explains Why He Decided to Retire From Electoral Politics After 2028

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has opened up about his decision to retire from electoral politics after announcing that he will not contest the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections. While making it clear that he is stepping away from contesting elections, the senior Congress leader emphasized that he will continue to remain active in public life and raise his voice on issues affecting the people.

Siddaramaiah first made the announcement during a public event held in KR Pet in Mandya district, where he attended a birthday celebration. His statement created widespread discussion within political circles, as he confirmed that the 2028 Assembly election would mark the end of his electoral journey. Later, he elaborated on the reasons behind his decision through a detailed message shared on social media.

According to Siddaramaiah, one of the primary reasons for stepping away from elections is the changing nature of politics. He said the political environment has become increasingly challenging over the years and believes it is the right time to retire from electoral contests. However, he stressed that his commitment to public service remains unchanged and that he will continue working for the welfare of the people even without holding an elected position.

The veteran leader also revealed that many supporters from his Varuna constituency have urged him to contest once again. Despite the encouragement, he said he has made up his mind not to participate in future elections. Reflecting on his earlier political journey, Siddaramaiah recalled that people in his constituency once extended wholehearted support during elections, saying those circumstances have changed significantly over time.

Age and health also played an important role in his decision. Siddaramaiah noted that he is currently 79 years old and will be around 82 by the time the 2028 Assembly elections are held. He said advancing age may not allow him to work with the same energy and efficiency that he has maintained throughout his political career, making it appropriate to step aside from electoral politics.

Looking back at his long public life, Siddaramaiah said his political journey began in 1978 when he was elected as a Taluk Board member. By 2028, he will have completed nearly five decades in politics. During this period, he said he has experienced both victories and defeats but has always remained committed to the principles he believes in.

The former Chief Minister added that he takes satisfaction in the fact that he has never acted against his conscience or compromised his ideological beliefs during his political career. Although he plans to retire from contesting elections, Siddaramaiah reiterated that he will continue participating in public affairs and speaking on issues concerning the people of Karnataka.
