Row over police action after FIR filed against youths who caught stone pelters in Chikkamagaluru

Chikkamagaluru : A fresh controversy has erupted in Chikkamagaluru after police registered cases not only against alleged stone pelters but also against Hindu youths who caught them and handed them over to authorities. The move has drawn sharp criticism from Hindu organisations, which have termed the action “unfair” and “demoralising.”

The incident took place near Tilak Park in the Vijayanagar locality, where a Hindu family had complained of repeated stone pelting on their house over the past week. Sudha, the house owner, alleged that miscreants were targeting her residence during afternoon and late-night hours, creating fear among family members. “We have been living under constant tension as stones were being thrown at our house repeatedly,” she said.

On Monday night, local youths reportedly caught two individuals — Hussain and Riyan — allegedly while they were pelting stones and handed them over to Basavanahalli police. However, following a counter complaint that the accused were assaulted with a bat, police registered a separate FIR against Shyam and Santosh, who were among those who apprehended the suspects.

Shyam is associated with Bajrang Dal’s Hassan division, while Santosh serves as the district president of BJP Yuva Morcha. Police have invoked provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in connection with the injuries sustained by the accused youths, who are currently undergoing treatment at the district hospital.

The decision to file a counter case has triggered protests outside Basavanahalli police station, with members of Hindu organisations and SDPI gathering and raising slogans. For some time, the situation turned tense as both sides demanded action in their favour.

Hindu leaders have questioned the rationale behind booking those who allegedly intervened to protect a family and assist police. They argued that such action discourages citizens from stepping forward to prevent crimes. Meanwhile, SDPI leaders have alleged that Muslim youths were assaulted without justification and demanded strict legal action.

Police officials have stated that both complaints were examined and cases were registered based on available evidence. Additional forces have been deployed in sensitive areas to maintain law and order.

The incident has once again highlighted the fragile communal atmosphere in the district, with authorities urging residents to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours as the investigation continues.
