Monsoon Regains Strength Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Coastal and Malnad Karnataka
Monsoon activity has intensified across Karnataka with heavy rain forecast for coastal and Malnad districts while several inland regions are also expected to receive showers and gusty winds today.
The southwest monsoon has regained momentum across Karnataka, bringing fresh rainfall activity to several parts of the state. According to the latest weather forecast, heavy rain is likely in parts of the coastal belt and Malnad region, while many districts in north and south interior Karnataka are also expected to receive moderate showers accompanied by strong winds.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts. Similar weather conditions are expected in Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu, where continuous rainfall could impact daily life and travel in vulnerable areas.
Rain bearing clouds are also expected to spread across northern interior Karnataka. Belagavi district may experience heavy showers along with wind speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds is also likely in Bagalkot, Bidar, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayapura and Yadgir districts.
Southern interior Karnataka is also set to witness widespread rainfall. Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Hassan, Kolar, Mandya, Ramanagara and Tumakuru are expected to receive moderate showers during the day. Ballari, Davanagere, Mysuru and Vijayanagara may also witness rain along with strong winds.
The wet spell is expected to continue beyond today. Weather officials have indicated that July 24 is also likely to bring rainfall across most coastal districts, with several interior regions continuing to remain under cloudy and rainy conditions.
Rainfall data recorded during the 24 hours ending on the afternoon of July 22 highlighted significant precipitation in several locations. Jagalbet in Uttara Kannada district received the highest rainfall at 22 centimetres. Kollur in Udupi recorded 7 centimetres, while Londa in Belagavi and Mani in Dakshina Kannada each received 6 centimetres.
Other notable rainfall figures included 4 centimetres in Puttur and Subrahmanya, 3 centimetres each in Bantwal, Belthangady, Mangaluru and Moodbidri of Dakshina Kannada district, and 3 centimetres in Kurdi of Raichur district.
In view of the heavy rain forecast, authorities have declared an Orange Alert for Dakshina Kannada district. As a precautionary measure, all schools and colleges in the district have been closed for the day. Officials have also urged residents to remain alert, especially in areas vulnerable to landslides, flooding and waterlogging, and to follow safety advisories until weather conditions improve.
With monsoon activity strengthening once again, farmers, commuters and residents across Karnataka are closely watching the changing weather pattern. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have advised people in rain affected regions to stay cautious as more showers are expected over the coming days.
