Man’s death in police custody triggers probe: Karnataka govt orders CID inquiry

Tumakuru : The mysterious death of a man inside Huliyaru police station has led to a major controversy, with the Karnataka government ordering a CID investigation into the case. Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara stated that the probe aims to uncover the truth behind the incident.
Kantaraju, hailing from Yalanadu village, was detained along with five others for questioning in a gambling case. However, his death during or shortly after the inquiry has raised suspicions of custodial misconduct.
Pradeep, an associate of the deceased, said, “Kantaraju was already unwell when police brought him in. Despite this, no care was taken. He was kicked by an officer when he was lying down.” He added that Kantaraju collapsed near the station entrance after the inquiry process.
The family has accused the police of assaulting Kantaraju. His daughter Nandita said, “We want justice. This should not happen to anyone else.” The victim’s son Tilak Gowda also blamed the police, alleging that they ignored his father’s health condition and subjected him to physical abuse.
According to the complaint, Kantaraju suffered injuries to his head, chest, and legs. The family claims that timely medical attention could have saved his life.
The incident has caused widespread anger in the village, with residents demanding strict action against those involved. The grieving family, including Kantaraju’s wife and children, has been left shattered by the sudden loss.
A UDR case has been registered at Huliyaru police station. With the CID now handling the investigation, officials are expected to examine medical reports, witness statements, and CCTV footage to determine the exact cause of death.
The case highlights growing concerns over custodial safety and reinforces the need for strict adherence to legal procedures by law enforcement agencies.
