Lokayukta court convicts former MD V. Muniyappa in disproportionate assets case

Bengaluru : In a significant anti-corruption verdict, the Karnataka Lokayukta Court has convicted V. Muniyappa in a disproportionate assets case, sentencing him to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a fine of ₹4.5 crore.

The judgment comes after a prolonged legal battle spanning nearly 12 years, marking a crucial development in one of the state’s notable corruption cases. Muniyappa, who earlier served as Managing Director of a technical council and was also associated with Basava Bhavan in Bengaluru, had been under investigation since 2014.

According to officials, a case was registered against him by the Karnataka Lokayukta police following allegations that he had amassed wealth far exceeding his known sources of income. The  order revealed that Muniyappa had allegedly acquired properties and assets worth crores through illegal means during his tenure in public office.

During the course of the trial, the prosecution presented documentary evidence and financial records to establish that the accused’s income did not justify the scale of assets in his possession. The court, after examining the material evidence and witness testimonies, found him guilty of corruption and misuse of official position.

In its ruling, the Lokayukta Court stated that if the accused fails to pay the imposed fine of ₹4.5 crore, he will have to undergo an additional six months of imprisonment. The judgment is being seen as a strong message against corruption in public administration.

Legal experts have noted that the case highlights the importance of sustained investigation and judicial scrutiny in ensuring accountability, even if it takes years for cases to reach their conclusion. The verdict also reinforces the role of the Lokayukta in tackling high-level corruption in Karnataka.

The conviction has drawn attention from various quarters, with anti-corruption activists welcoming the decision and calling for stricter enforcement against officials involved in similar offences.

With this ruling, the long-pending case that began in 2014 has finally reached its conclusion, bringing closure to one of the prominent disproportionate assets cases in the state.
