Karnataka Heavy Rainfall: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for next 2 days in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on May 20 and 21, with heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder, lightning and strong winds predicted due to a low pressure system over the Arabian Sea.

The rains are expected to continue till May 22, indicating an active pre-monsoon phase in the coastal region. There has been widespread rainfall across the districts since Monday afternoon. In light of the forecast, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has taken precautionary measures.

District Magistrate Mullai Muhilan has directed parents to ensure that children do not go near low-lying areas, lakes, rivers or seashores. He has instructed district and taluk level officials to remain at their headquarters and be fully prepared for disaster management operations.

The district administration has instructed incident commanders appointed in various areas to remain vigilant, respond promptly to public grievances and remain in constant touch with the district control room.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and those who have already gone out to sea have been asked to return to shore immediately. The District Collector has warned tourists and the general public not to visit river banks or sea beaches during this period.

All relevant departments have been instructed to set up vigilance centers in every taluk and maintain a state of preparedness. Many parts of Udupi district, including Udupi city, received moderate rain on Monday. A red alert has been issued for the district due to the possibility of heavy rain on May 20.

On Monday morning, May 19, heavy rains lashed the Malpe coastal area. It rained from Udupi to Bannanje, but the areas from the city bus stand towards Manipal were dry. By evening, the sky was overcast and there was moderate rain with thunderstorms.

Due to a low pressure system, strong winds are expected in the coastal areas. IMD has advised fishermen venturing into the sea to exercise extreme caution. This directive for Udupi was issued by Dr. K. Vidya Kumari, Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, who stressed the need for vigilance and preparedness at all levels of administration.
