Karnataka govt directs private hospitals to mandatorily report pocso cases

Bengaluru : In a significant step towards strengthening child protection mechanisms, the Karnataka Women and Child Development Department has issued strict directions to private hospitals to mandatorily report cases of child sexual abuse under the POCSO Act 2012.
The department has clarified that whenever cases of sexual abuse involving minors are identified, private hospitals must immediately inform the police or the Special Juvenile Police Unit without any delay. Authorities подчеркнули that hospitals are often the first point of contact in such sensitive cases, making prompt reporting crucial for timely intervention and justice.
Officials have stressed that failure to comply with these directives will invite strict legal action against the concerned hospitals. Any attempt to suppress information or delay reporting could not only obstruct investigations but also endanger the safety and well-being of the victims.
To support children in distress, the department has also highlighted the use of the Childline helpline Childline 1098, which provides immediate assistance and protection services to minors in need.
In addition to mandatory reporting, private hospitals have been instructed to ensure that their staff are adequately trained to handle such cases with sensitivity and in accordance with legal protocols. Proper documentation, immediate medical care, and coordination with law enforcement agencies are key aspects of the guidelines.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the underreporting of child sexual abuse cases. Authorities believe that strengthening accountability among private healthcare providers will significantly improve detection and response systems.
The directive also emphasises that early reporting can play a vital role in preserving evidence and ensuring that victims receive timely legal and psychological support. By involving hospitals more actively in the reporting chain, the government aims to create a more responsive and child-friendly protection framework.
Officials reiterated that protecting children from abuse is a shared responsibility and urged all stakeholders, including healthcare institutions, to strictly adhere to the guidelines. The initiative is expected to enhance transparency, improve coordination between departments, and ultimately ensure better safety and justice for vulnerable children.
