Karnataka Cabinet Expansion Brings Mix of Veterans Young Faces and Political Returnees

The long wait for the Karnataka cabinet expansion has finally come to an end, with the official list of new ministers now confirmed ahead of the swearing in ceremony scheduled at Lok Bhavan. The expansion has generated widespread political interest across the state, as it brings together experienced legislators, first time ministers, former ministers and leaders who switched parties over the years before finding a place in the Congress government.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar personally informed the selected leaders about their induction into the cabinet, setting the stage for a significant political event. As the official announcement was made, celebrations erupted in several constituencies, where party workers and supporters welcomed the inclusion of their local representatives in the state ministry.

The new cabinet reflects a careful attempt to maintain regional representation, community balance and administrative experience. Along with established political veterans, the list also includes younger leaders who have steadily built their political careers and earned recognition within the party.

One of the prominent names is HC Balakrishna, the Magadi MLA, who has been elected to the Assembly five times. His political journey has seen him move through different parties before joining the Congress in 2018. Currently serving as the chairman of KRDCL, Balakrishna is now set to take on ministerial responsibilities after years of legislative experience.

Shivaraj Sangappa Tangadagi from Kanakagiri is another experienced legislator returning to the cabinet. A science graduate, Tangadagi entered politics as an Independent candidate before later joining the Congress. He has already served as a minister in previous governments and currently handles responsibilities related to Kannada and Culture as well as Backward Classes Welfare.

Santosh Lad, representing Kalaghatagi, also returns to the cabinet with considerable administrative experience. Having served multiple terms as an MLA and minister, Lad initially entered politics through the Janata Dal before joining the Congress. His experience in labour administration is expected to strengthen the government’s governance agenda.

Senior leader Basavaraj Rayareddy, who represents Yelburga, has had a long political career spanning both state and national politics. Having served as an MLA multiple times and as a Member of Parliament, he has also worked as Higher Education Minister and as an economic adviser to the Chief Minister. His return is viewed as a move to bring administrative experience into the cabinet.

Bellary Rural MLA B Nagendra is another familiar face. Over the years, he has represented different political platforms before joining the Congress. Previously entrusted with departments related to Scheduled Tribes Welfare, Youth Empowerment and Sports, he brings considerable ministerial experience back into the government.

Nagamangala MLA N Cheluvarayaswamy also continues to remain an influential political figure. Having served both as an MLA and Member of Parliament, he earlier held important portfolios such as Health and Transport before taking charge of Agriculture after joining the Congress.

Rudrappa Lamani, representing the reserved Haveri constituency, has steadily risen within the Congress without changing political affiliations. A law graduate and senior leader from the Banjara community, he has served as Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and previously handled Textile and Muzrai portfolios.

Challakere MLA T Raghumurthy represents another success story. A former engineer who resigned from government service to enter politics, he has secured three consecutive Assembly victories and earned the reputation of a consistent performer within the Congress.

Dr Ajay Singh from Jewargi joins the cabinet carrying forward a strong political legacy. The son of former Chief Minister Dharam Singh has remained associated with the Congress throughout his political career and has represented Kalaburagi district after winning consecutive Assembly elections.

Hunagund MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar is widely known not only for his political work but also for his social and environmental initiatives. His contributions beyond electoral politics have earned him national recognition, making his induction another notable development.

Gayathri Shanthegowda becomes one of the important women representatives in the expanded cabinet. A Member of the Legislative Council with experience as a district panchayat president, she has twice entered the Council through local body elections and now assumes a ministerial role.

Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad represents the younger generation of Congress leadership. Beginning his political career through the National Students Union of India, he later became active in party organisation and contested parliamentary elections before entering the Assembly through the Shivajinagar by election. His inclusion strengthens Bengaluru’s representation in the cabinet.

Senior Davanagere leader SS Mallikarjun also finds a place after extensive discussions within the party. The son of veteran leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa, he has previously handled portfolios including Youth Services, Horticulture and Mines under earlier Congress governments. His administrative background is expected to benefit the new cabinet.

PM Narendra Swamy from Malavalli has waited several years for a ministerial opportunity. Having risen through the Youth Congress and organisational structure of the party, he was previously considered for a cabinet berth before finally securing one in this expansion.

Madhu Bangarappa, son of former Chief Minister Bangarappa, continues his ministerial journey. After beginning his career with the Janata Dal and later joining the Congress, he currently oversees School Education and now receives another opportunity to serve in the cabinet.

Chamrajnagar MLA C Puttarangashetty is another experienced legislator joining the ministry. With four Assembly victories and experience leading the state owned MSIL corporation, he is regarded as an influential backward class leader.

Athani MLA Laxman Savadi makes a significant political comeback. Formerly associated with the BJP, where he served as Deputy Chief Minister and handled Transport and Agriculture portfolios, he joined the Congress before the 2023 Assembly elections and secured a convincing victory.

KS Basavanthappa from Mayakonda enters the cabinet as one of the newer faces. Coming from an agricultural background, he won his first Assembly election in 2023 by a significant margin and now receives his first ministerial assignment.

Arasikere MLA KM Shivalingegowda has also secured a cabinet berth after switching from the Janata Dal to the Congress before the last Assembly elections. He currently serves as chairman of the Karnataka Housing Board and is expected to contribute administrative experience.

One of the most prominent names in the cabinet remains BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan. The five time MLA from Chamarajpet has already held important portfolios including Housing, Minority Welfare and Waqf. He also serves as district in charge minister for Vijayanagara and Ballari and continues to retain a significant place in the government.

The expanded cabinet demonstrates the Congress leadership’s effort to balance experience with fresh leadership while accommodating regional aspirations and social representation. With ministers now preparing to assume office, attention will soon shift to portfolio allocation and the government’s next phase of governance as expectations rise across Karnataka.
