Flipkart Takes on Food Delivery Giants With New Bengaluru Launch
Flipkart is preparing to enter the food delivery business with a Bengaluru pilot, while planning wider expansion through ONDC as competition intensifies in India's online delivery market.

Flipkart is preparing to make its entry into India’s highly competitive food delivery market, with Bengaluru expected to become the first city where the service will be tested. The Walmart owned ecommerce company is reportedly planning to begin a pilot rollout within the next month before expanding the offering to other major cities based on customer response.
The move marks a significant step for Flipkart as it looks to diversify beyond ecommerce and strengthen its presence in the country’s rapidly growing online services sector. By entering food delivery, the company will compete directly with established players that have long dominated the market.
According to reports, Flipkart is considering launching a dedicated application for its food delivery platform. In addition to its own app, the company is also exploring plans to make the service available through the government backed Open Network for Digital Commerce, commonly known as ONDC. This strategy could help the company reach a broader customer base while offering users more ways to access its services.
The initial rollout in Bengaluru is expected to serve as a testing phase, allowing Flipkart to evaluate customer demand, delivery operations and overall service quality. If the pilot proves successful, the company is likely to expand the platform to several other metropolitan cities across India. However, Flipkart has not yet announced an official launch date for the service.
The food delivery industry in India has become increasingly competitive, with major companies already serving millions of customers every day. Flipkart’s entry is expected to add fresh competition and could lead to more choices, promotional offers and improved services for consumers.
While the company prepares for its expansion into food delivery, it is also facing fresh legal and regulatory scrutiny. The Forum for Internet Retailers, Sellers and Traders has reportedly submitted a complaint to the Competition Commission of India, raising concerns about Flipkart’s business practices.
The complaint alleges that Flipkart generated nearly Rs 3000 crore through tax related irregularities and used those financial resources to offer heavy discounts that could negatively impact independent sellers. It also claims that such pricing practices create an uneven competitive environment in the online marketplace.
Flipkart has not publicly disclosed further details regarding the allegations or the timeline for its food delivery launch. As the company moves ahead with its new business plans, industry observers will be watching closely to see how its expansion reshapes competition in India’s fast growing food delivery sector while the regulatory issues continue to unfold.
