Bipin Rawat, wife Madulika Rawat and 10 other dead in IAF chopper crashed in the hilly Nilgiris district between Coimbatore and Sulur in Tamil Nadu today. PM Narendra Modi condolences over the death of Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others in a chopper crash earlier in the day in the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu.

The chopper crashed in a forest area, reportedly due to poor visibility following heavy fog. The identities of the bodies killed in the crash will be confirmed through DNA testing. Meanwhile, the IAF has ordered a Court of Inquiry into the accident, involving a Mi-17VH chopper that took from the Sulur IAF Station in nearby Coimbatore.

Gen Bipin Rawat was an outstanding soldier. A true patriot, he greatly contributed to modernising our armed forces and security apparatus. His insights and perspectives on strategic matters were exceptional. His passing away has saddened me deeply. Om Shanti, narendra modi tweeted.

In another tweet, I am deeply anguished by the helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu in which we have lost Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and other personnel of the Armed Forces. They served India with utmost diligence. My thoughts are with the bereaved families.

As India’s first CDS, Gen Rawat worked on diverse aspects relating to our armed forces including defence reforms. He brought with him a rich experience of serving in the Army. India will never forget his exceptional service.

According to reports, the helicopter caught fire after crash-landing. As soon as the local administration learned about the mishap, they rushed to the site and launched a rescue operation with the help of locals.

Fourteen people were on board the military chopper that crashed between Coimbatore & Sulur in Tamil Nadu. They included CDS Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, Brig LS Lidder, Lt Col Harjinder Singh, NK Gursewak Singh, NK Jitendra Kr, L/Naik Vivek Kumar, L/Naik B Sai Teja & Hav Satpal.
