Public outrage over toll-like parking fee at Mangaluru’s Kadri Park

Mangaluru The iconic Kadri Park in Mangaluru, revamped under the Smart City project at a cost of several crores, is now at the center of public anger after authorities decided to introduce a toll-like parking fee system on its adjoining road.

Kadri Park, one of the most popular hangout spots for youths and families, attracts thousands of visitors daily. However, starting from January, visitors may have to pay a fee similar to a highway toll if they park or linger near the park for more than a few minutes.

According to officials, the shops newly constructed along the Kadri Park road have been leased to a private agency through a tender process. The same firm is responsible for maintaining the park’s commercial spaces, footpaths, and parking zones. Since the agency has not been generating the expected revenue, Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) has reportedly approved a plan to impose a parking charge on vehicles using the road.

Under the proposed system, advanced cameras will capture the vehicle’s number plate and link it to the driver’s FASTag. Vehicles passing through within five minutes will not be charged, but those parked or delayed longer will face a deduction of ₹50.

The move has sparked widespread criticism from the public, who argue that Kadri Park is meant to be a free recreational zone. Local residents and visitors have slammed the toll-like system as unnecessary and exploitative, warning that it could discourage families and tourists from visiting the park.

Citizens have also raised concerns that such a move will disrupt smooth traffic flow around the area and transform a peaceful public space into a commercialized zone. Many have urged the Smart City authorities to immediately withdraw the proposal.
