Covid surge, School closed in Karnataka, govt issued new guidelines

Owing to the increase in the number of covid cases in state, A weekend curfew has been announced in Karnataka for two weeks starting from January 6 and the night curfew which is already in effect has also been extended by two weeks. For weekend curfew schools will closed in Karnataka on Saturday, January 8. Karnataka government issued new guidelines on Thursday.

The Karnataka government on Tuesday announced to shut down schools, except Classes 10-12, in Bengaluru city. A weekend curfew has been announced in the city for two weeks starting from January 6 and the night curfew which is already in effect has also been extended by two weeks.

“In Bengaluru urban district, all schools and colleges except, medical and para medical will remain closed with effect from Thursday except Class 10, 11 and 12,” read an order issued by the Karnataka government. These decisions were announced by the Karnataka revenue minister R Ashok, following a meeting called by chief minister (CM) Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday evening.

The meeting called by the chief minister was attended by senior cabinet ministers, members of the technical advisory committee and other senior officials. Addressing the media, Ashok said that the daily increase in the cases crossing the 10,000-mark in the state is inevitable and since most of the cases are reported in Bengaluru, special guidelines have been planned for the city.

“Pubs, clubs, restaurants, bars, hotels and other eating places will function with 50% of the seating capacity while strictly adhering to Covid protocols. Also, entry to such places will be restricted to fully vaccinated persons,” read the guideline issued by the government.

Karnataka on Thursday recorded 5,031 Covid-19 cases and one death. The capital Bengaluru alone registered 4,324 infections taking the positivity rate to 7.5 per cent. However, the positivity rate of the state overall remained lower at 3.95 per cent. No new Omircon cases were detected in the state. The total Omicron count in Karnataka is at 226.
