Unlike traditional closed-book tests, these assessments encourage students to use their study materials, encouraging critical thinking and application of concepts. CBSE plan involves conducting a pilot phase of open-book tests covering subjects like English, Mathematics and Science for classes 9 and 10 and English, Mathematics and Biology for classes 11 and 12 in selected schools.

The trial run, scheduled for November-December this year, aims to evaluate students’ completion times and gather stakeholder feedback. Contrary to misconceptions, open-book tests pose unique challenges, emphasizing comprehension, critical thinking, and effective synthesis of information rather than memorization.
