Modi Govt reconsider minimum age of marriage for girls

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech on the occasion of the 74th Independence Day on Saturday, said that the government has set up a committee to reconsider the minimum age for marriage of girls in India.

“We have set up committee to reconsider the minimum age for marriage of our daughters. We will take appropriate decision after the committee submits its report,” said PM Narendra Modi.

He added that the committee will also look at efforts that can be taken to reduce malnutrition among girls.

He added that today India is one of those countries where women are being included in combat and non-combat roles in Navy and the Airforce.

“Various policies of the Indian government like those on maternity leave, triple talaq have empowered our country’s women. Over 5000

centres of Jan Aushadhi Kendra have provided more than five crore sanitary pads to poor women for just Rs 1,” said PM Modi while delivering his seventh consecutive Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
