A man who succeeded growing desert plant in Karnataka soil

K.R.BABU

It is a pure desert crop. But this crop is very rare in our country. It is grown in acres of far-flung countries like Dubai, Saudi, Iran, and Iraq. That is dates.

It is looks like a palm tree. There is a huge demand for dates in our country and abroad. This crop can be grown in desert areas. But Divakar, a farmer from Gouribidanur, proved one can grow this in our land too.

It is indeed a wonderful surprise. Success in cultivating dates in such a way is a farmer’s
achievement. He is a double degree holder who does not know what the farm is. He was influenced by a “grass-roots” book written by a Japanese author regarding how to improved agriculture. He left job in Tumkur University and returned home. Found his new life in agriculture. He collected information from a farmer in Tamil Nadu and learned about the development of dates and decided to grow dates.

There should be a specific environment for this crop. The place which he had choosen is impossible to grow. And yet he grew. Though People calling him crazy. He didn’t care about it. Contacted the farmer of Tamil Nadu and bought 150 plants. The price of single plant is three thousand rupees. Make a 25-foot row of saplings and planted them. He had digged two square foot shot and left about 20 days. At first he put organic manure into the pits and put orange leaves to save it from pests.

Specialty in dates plants includes both male and female plants. For every ten males there should be fifty females plants. Female plants only yield dates. Yield available for four years after planting. Can be harvested from 50 to 60 years of age. Hundreds of plants can yield one and a half tonnes of dates. Earn six to ten lakh rupees. Farmer Diwakar is a witness to show everyone that if you believe in mother earth the success is yours.
