Bengaluru ranks second in the country for juvenile crimes: NCRB report

Bengaluru has emerged as the second-highest city in India for juvenile crimes, according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The city reported 427 cases of juvenile offenses in 2023, marking a sharp rise compared to 200 cases in 2022 and 177 in 2021. Chennai topped the list with 523 cases last year.

The NCRB data revealed mixed trends across other metro cities. Hyderabad saw a decline from 300 cases in 2022 to 180 in 2023, while Kolkata witnessed a steep rise from 9 to 115 cases in the same period.

A senior police officer, attributed the alarming increase to the glamorization of crime in the media and a misguided belief among youth that violence and notoriety can bring quick fame. Many offenders reportedly drop out of school after the 10th grade, leaving them directionless and vulnerable to criminal influences.

The officer added that family instability, low-income backgrounds, and unemployment are major contributing factors pushing minors towards crime. He also highlighted loopholes in the justice system, pointing out that arresting juveniles for minor offenses often exposes them to hardened criminals, encouraging repeat or more serious offences.

The rising trend, experts warn, underscores the need for stronger rehabilitation programs, community engagement, and better early intervention mechanisms to prevent at-risk youth from entering the criminal system.
