Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the Delhi Capitals franchise for the 2027 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sourav Ganguly Appointed as New Head Coach of Delhi Capitals for IPL 2027.
Although Ganguly has shared a long-standing association with the Delhi franchise, this marks the first time he will take charge as a head coach in IPL history.
Hemang Badani And Supporting Staff Out:
Ganguly will replace Hemang Badani, who served as the head coach of Delhi Capitals for the last two seasons. The franchise finished in sixth place during the IPL 2026 season, and following the team’s below-par performance, the management has decided to undergo a major restructuring.
As part of the changes, Delhi Capitals have also ended their associations with bowling coach Munaf Patel, team director Venugopal Rao, and assistant coach Ian Bell.
Yuvraj Singh Could Join Coaching Staff:
The 54-year-old Sourav Ganguly is expected to bring in his own support staff as part of the new coaching setup. There are strong reports that former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh could join the Delhi Capitals coaching team.
Ganguly had earlier worked as the head coach of Pretoria Capitals in the South African T20 (SA20) league, where he guided the team to the final and showcased his coaching abilities.
Expressing his happiness over taking up the new responsibility, Sourav Ganguly said: “I am extremely happy to take up the role of head coach in the IPL. Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart. We have a lot of talented players, and the team has played some excellent cricket in recent years. I am looking forward to working with the players and building a strong, fearless team for the upcoming season.”
Ganguly will work with a strong leadership group that includes captain Axar Patel and experienced batter KL Rahul. The return of Rishabh Pant to Delhi Capitals after being acquired back from Lucknow Super Giants following the 2026 season has further strengthened the franchise’s experienced Indian core.
Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal welcomed Ganguly’s appointment, stating that Dada has always been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals family. He added that having one of India’s greatest captains and cricket administrators take charge as head coach is a matter of pride for the franchise.
Another co-owner, Kiran Kumar Grandhi, also expressed confidence that Ganguly’s vast experience would be a major asset for the team.
