India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has announced a revision in airfares effective from October 6. The airline stated that ticket prices for both domestic and international flights will increase due to the continuous rise in global jet fuel prices.

According to IndiGo, airfares will increase by Rs 100 to Rs 350, depending on the distance of travel. The airline announced the fare revision on Monday, citing the rising cost of aviation fuel as the primary reason behind the decision.

Rising Jet Fuel Prices Impact Airline Operations:

Global fuel prices have been witnessing a steady increase, with the latest rise being more than 14% compared to the previous month. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices have reached their highest levels in nearly a decade, adding significant pressure on airline operating costs.

Since aviation fuel accounts for a major share of airline expenses, the increase in fuel prices has made fare adjustments necessary. IndiGo said it has revised the fuel charges for both domestic and international operations to partially offset the impact of rising costs.

Fuel prices have continued to rise globally following tensions between Iran and the United States since the end of February. The increase has also affected aviation turbine fuel prices.

On October 3, ATF prices were reportedly increased by around Rs 16 per litre, pushing the rates for domestic airlines from approximately Rs 121 per litre to Rs 137 per litre.

Following the Iran conflict, jet fuel prices have increased by around 5.46%, further contributing to higher operational expenses for airlines.

Airfares Depend on Multiple Factors:

Air ticket prices are determined based on several factors, including passenger demand, competition among airlines, and seat availability. However, rising fuel costs remain one of the biggest factors influencing airfare changes.

Aviation turbine fuel accounts for nearly 35% to 40% of an airline’s operating expenses. Any increase in ATF prices creates additional financial pressure on the aviation sector, prompting airlines to revise ticket prices to manage rising costs.

With fuel prices continuing to remain high, passengers may have to pay more for air travel in the coming days.
