Breaking: Hijab Row: Karnataka high court Refers Matter to Larger Bench

Hijab Row: Single bench of Karnataka High Court has referred the Hijab ban matter to larger bench. The single bench has refused to pass interim orders permitting girls to attend colleges wearing Hijab and said that interim relief is to be considered by the larger bench.

“These matters give rise to certain constitutional questions of seminal importance in view of certain aspects of personal law,” the judges said, referring the case to a panel of judges to be led by the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.

A massive protest march, led by Muslim women of several organisations, was taken out in Karnataka’s Kalburgi on Wednesday demanding Hijab be allowed in the state’s educational institutes as the government reiterated its position of “no-compromise” on its circular to ban headscarves in public schools and colleges.

It is against this backdrop that the Karnataka Government has announced a three-day holiday for school and college. Speaking to media Karnataka Higher Education Minister Ashwath Narayana said that 3 days school vacancies have been announced in the wake of the uniform dispute in the state colleges.

Speaking further, Karnataka Minister Ashwath Narayana said the government had already made its decision on the hijab issue. The situation is serious, though. There is a hearing in the High Court regarding this. For the next three days, holiday has been announced to all high schools, PU colleges, degree colleges and engineering colleges across the state.
