A wave of concern has gripped Russia’s Siberian region following the death of 28-year-old laboratory technician Daria Shipilova, who was employed at a research institute. Plague Scare: Women Dies, Over 200 People Quarantined.
Authorities have initiated precautionary measures after suspicions emerged over possible exposure to plague-causing bacteria, with more than 200 individuals placed under quarantine. Reports indicate that five hospitals have also been temporarily shut as officials intensify monitoring and investigation efforts.
However, it has not yet been officially confirmed that Daria died due to the plague. Statements from local authorities have differed, and further tests and investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of her death.
Daria Shipilova was reportedly working at the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov, located in Russia’s Irkutsk region. According to reports, she informed medical personnel that a test tube containing live bacteria accidentally broke while she was collecting samples inside the laboratory.
Following the incident, Daria reportedly developed health complications. She was admitted to a hospital on September 29 after experiencing severe breathing difficulties and symptoms of pneumonia. As her condition worsened, she was placed on ventilator support. However, she died on October 1.
Following her death, authorities have been closely monitoring the health of laboratory staff members and individuals who had contact with her. More than 200 people who were reportedly in contact with Daria have been placed under quarantine as a precautionary step to prevent any possible spread of infection.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that public gatherings and events in Irkutsk city have been temporarily cancelled. Information about the temporary closure of five hospitals has also raised concerns among residents.
Amid the ongoing investigation, statements from local officials have gained attention. Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev reportedly stated that tests conducted on Daria’s samples did not detect any dangerous bacteria linked to her professional work.
According to him, Daria’s death may have been caused by pneumonia of an unknown origin. He also stated that no symptoms of infection have been reported among other employees of the research institute. This indicates that there is currently no official confirmation that a plague infection has spread.
Conflicting Statements Create Confusion:
The situation became more complicated after Alexey Tsydenov, the Governor of the neighbouring Buryatia region, stated that Daria’s death could possibly be linked to plague.
The conflicting statements from officials have created confusion among the public, while authorities continue to wait for final test results.
Plague is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. However, in the current case, confirmation of plague infection requires detailed laboratory reports and further investigation.
