In single day 49 students tests positive for Covid-19 in Government hostels

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Telangana, the health authorities are concerned over the identification of new clusters in different educational institutes and hostels in the state.

As many as 49 students tested positive for COVID-19 at different government-run hostels and schools in Telangana. The news comes as a matter of huge concern for the health authorities. Several states across the country have been imposing night curfews and lockdowns in the wake of the recent rise in COVID cases.

In Telangana, the daily tally of new cases has touched the 300-mark in the past few days. 37 students out of the 49 who tested positive are from hostels and schools of Hyderabad while 12 from Nagarkurnool, as per a report in Times of India. 34 students out of the 37 in Hyderabad were from Government High School (GHS), Mudfort, Secunderabad. All 34 students were staying in the same hostel and had been attending physical classes.

“All the 34 students are staying in the hostel run by the tribal welfare department (ST Hostel for Boys, Bowenpally). After one of the students tested positive, they got the remaining boys tested as well. We were informed about the positive cases only after 3pm.
With more students expected to return to the school in the coming days, the authorities are planning to inform them to get them tested at the nearest testing centre to ensure the spread of the virus can be contained.

“As students will be coming back to school only on Monday, we are trying to reach parents and alert them to ensure that the virus is not spread to others through students,” she added. Telangana on Saturday recorded 394 new cases while 3 more people succumbed to death due to the virus in the state.
