PhonePe, Paytm and Google Pay: Well, there is a change that may affect you. Mobile numbers linked to Unified Payments Interface (UPI) accounts that are not in use for a long time – those that have been cancelled, surrendered or recycled – are set to be removed from bank records with effect from April 1.
Therefore, those who are subscribers to UPI-powered apps like Paytm, Google Pay, and PhonePe may now have to re-register to add their current mobile numbers to the system using cancelled or surrendered mobile numbers.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates the retail payment systems such as Unified Payments Interface (UPI), has already made it compulsory for banks and payment service providers (PSPs) facilitating UPI transactions such as Paytm and Google Pay to update their customers’ mobile number records at least once every week.
New UPI Rules From April 1, 2025:
Simply put, if your mobile number linked to the UPI app has been cancelled or surrendered, it may get disconnected from your bank account and consequently your UPI account may be suspended. Mobile numbers linked to UPI applications but not in use for a long time hinder the smooth functioning of UPI services.

Remove UPI IDs linked to cancelled/surrendered mobile numbers: NPCI to banks and digital payment service providers. Banks and PSPs will have to update their databases by March 31 to identify such mobile connections using tools like the Mobile Number Cancellation List (MNRL) and the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP).
MNRL is a digitally signed list of permanently disconnected mobile numbers based on information provided by telecom service providers. This list is published and available on the website of telecom regulator TRAI on a monthly basis.
The Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) is an integrated platform aimed at enabling real-time exchange of intelligence information among partners such as telecom operators, law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, and social media platforms.
