Bengaluru Bans Meat Sale and Animal Slaughter on September 14

The Greater Bengaluru Authority has announced a complete ban on animal slaughter and meat sales in Bengaluru on September 14 in view of Ganesh Chaturthi. The restriction will apply throughout the GBA jurisdiction for the festival day.

The order has been issued by the Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry under the Greater Bengaluru Authority. All slaughterhouses within the authority limits have been instructed not to carry out animal slaughter, while meat shops have been directed to stop sales for the day.

The administration has asked traders and members of the public to follow the order during the festival. Officials have also warned that violations could lead to legal action against those found carrying out animal slaughter or selling meat despite the restriction.

The annual restriction is being implemented as part of the arrangements for Ganesh Chaturthi. With religious activities and public celebrations expected across the city, authorities are also putting additional arrangements in place at locations where Ganesh idols will be immersed.

One of the main immersion arrangements has been made at the Halasuru Lake Kalyani. Authorities have prepared the facility to accommodate Ganesh idol immersion during the festival period.

Only clay and environmentally friendly Ganesh idols will be permitted for immersion at the designated facility. Plaster of Paris idols have been prohibited as part of measures aimed at reducing the environmental impact of festival celebrations.

Several facilities have been arranged at the immersion location to manage the movement of devotees and ensure public safety. CCTV cameras have been installed to monitor activities, while crane services will be available around the clock.

The arrangements also include an ambulance service, lighting facilities and drinking water for visitors. Traffic management measures are being put in place as officials expect a large number of people and vehicles to visit the immersion site.

The immersion facility will remain available on selected dates during the festival period. According to the arrangements announced by the authorities, immersion will be permitted on September 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 27 and 28.

On the intervening dates, immersion activities will be temporarily stopped to allow cleaning and maintenance work at the facility. These cleaning days include September 15, 17, 19, 21, 23 and 25.

The arrangements are intended to keep the immersion process organised while also allowing the site to be cleaned regularly. Officials are expecting the designated facility to help reduce the pressure on other water bodies in the city.

The temporary meat sale restriction and animal slaughter ban are separate from the immersion arrangements but both form part of the preparations surrounding the festival. The meat ban will remain applicable on September 14 across the GBA area.

For meat traders, the order means shops will have to remain closed for the specified day. Consumers are also expected to plan their purchases accordingly and follow the festival day restrictions.

The authority has stressed that the order must be followed by businesses operating within its jurisdiction. Any violation involving unauthorised slaughter or meat sales could result in action under the applicable rules.

Meanwhile, the preparations at Halasuru Lake reflect the authorities focus on managing the environmental and public safety aspects of Ganesh Chaturthi. Restricting immersion to clay idols is intended to encourage more environmentally responsible celebrations.

With several immersion dates announced in advance, residents have been given a schedule to plan their festival activities. The availability of cranes, emergency medical support, lighting, drinking water and traffic arrangements is expected to make the process more manageable for visitors.

The festival will bring increased movement across Bengaluru, and civic authorities are expected to monitor arrangements at major celebration and immersion points. Residents and traders have been urged to cooperate with the temporary restrictions and follow the instructions issued by the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
