Mullayanagiri Entry Restricted on September 14 for Ganesha Festival

Tourists planning a visit to the popular hill stations of Chikkamagaluru during the Gauri Ganesha festival will have to change their plans. The district administration has announced a one day restriction on tourist entry to Mullayanagiri and several surrounding destinations on September 14.

The decision covers important locations in the Chandradrona mountain range, including Mullayanagiri and Seethalayanagiri. Tourist movement towards Baba Budangiri and other nearby areas will also be restricted as part of the arrangements for the festival.

The administration has said the decision is mainly intended to ensure that traditional religious activities can take place without disruption. Thousands of devotees from villages around the hill region are expected to visit the area during the festival.

More than 40 villages in and around the region traditionally participate in the celebrations. Devotees visit Mullayanagiri, Seethalayanagiri and Sri Guru Narukante Mutt for customary offerings and Chauthi rituals. These practices have reportedly continued for generations.

With a large number of devotees expected to arrive on the same day, officials are concerned that allowing regular tourist traffic could create difficulties. The number of private vehicles heading towards the hill destinations could increase significantly during the holiday.

Traffic management is therefore another major reason behind the restriction. The narrow and winding roads leading to the hill destinations can become heavily congested when large numbers of vehicles arrive at the same time.

Chikkamagaluru Deputy Commissioner Bhanwar Singh Meena has appealed to tourists to postpone their visit by a day and cooperate with the district administration. The request is aimed at keeping the routes clear for devotees and avoiding unnecessary inconvenience.

The restriction is expected to affect visitors planning to travel towards Mullayanagiri, Seethalayanagiri, Inam Dattatreya Baba Budan Swamy Dargah and Manikyadhara. Tourists who had already planned trips for September 14 are being advised to reschedule them.

The festival arrangements come at a time when Chikkamagaluru continues to attract visitors to its hill destinations. Mullayanagiri, in particular, remains one of the most popular tourist spots in the district, drawing visitors for its mountain scenery and cool climate.

However, on the festival day, the administration is giving priority to the traditional religious gatherings and smooth movement of devotees. Keeping tourist vehicles away from the busy routes for one day is expected to help officials manage the additional crowd.

The decision also reflects the challenges faced by popular hill destinations during festivals and holidays. Large gatherings can place considerable pressure on roads, parking areas and local traffic arrangements, especially in locations where road capacity is limited.

Officials are expected to monitor movement in the restricted areas and ensure that the arrangements remain in place throughout the day. Visitors are advised to check local instructions before beginning their journey towards the affected destinations.

The district administration has made it clear that the restriction is a temporary measure for September 14. Tourists can plan their visit for another day once the festival related arrangements are completed.
