Congress MLA’s Commission Allegations Put Karnataka Government Under Pressure

A fresh political controversy has emerged in Karnataka after Congress MLA Ashok Kumar Rai alleged that contractors working under the Mangaluru division of Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited are being pressured to pay a seven percent commission in the name of ministers.

Rai has reportedly brought the matter directly to the attention of Chief Minister DK Shivakumar through a written complaint. According to the allegation, engineers in the KRIDL division were collecting money from contractors by referring to the names of the department minister and the district in charge minister.

The allegation has now given the opposition another issue to target the state government. Leader of Opposition R Ashoka has strongly criticised the government, pointing out that the charge has come from within the ruling Congress itself rather than from an opposition leader.

Ashoka said opposition parties had previously raised allegations of corruption against the government, but such claims were often dismissed as political attacks. He argued that the situation is different now because a Congress legislator himself has raised concerns about the functioning of a government department.

The BJP leader has demanded that the government provide a clear explanation regarding the alleged seven percent collection. He also called for immediate action if the allegations are found to have merit.

Ashoka further demanded that officials accused of collecting the alleged commission should be suspended and that a criminal case should be considered. Since the money was allegedly collected using the names of ministers, he also sought an independent investigation into the possible involvement of the concerned department minister and the Mangaluru district in charge minister.

The opposition leader alleged that development projects funded through public money could be affected when contractors are forced to pay commissions. According to him, such practices can eventually put pressure on contractors and may have an impact on the quality of public works.

The controversy has also raised questions within the political establishment because the original complaint came from a Congress MLA. Ashoka questioned why the government had not responded more firmly to the allegations and sought transparency in the handling of the complaint.

For the Congress government, the issue comes at a politically sensitive time, as allegations surrounding commissions and corruption have repeatedly become subjects of debate in Karnataka. The latest KRIDL allegation is therefore likely to remain a point of confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition until the government responds and the claims are examined.

The allegations made by Ashok Kumar Rai are claims that require verification through an official inquiry. Any responsibility of individual officials or ministers can only be established after a proper investigation.
