Android 17 Brings New Memory Limits to Keep Phones More Responsive

Android 17 introduces a change aimed at one of the most frustrating smartphone problems: apps consuming too much memory and making the entire device feel slow. Google says the new per app memory limits are designed to keep Android devices more responsive and stable.

The feature was initially introduced on Pixel devices, while Google says more manufacturers are expected to adopt these limits across devices with different RAM configurations, including phones with 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and higher memory capacities.

How the new Android 17 memory system works

Under Android 17, the operating system can place a limit on how much memory an individual app is allowed to consume. The limit varies according to the device and its available RAM.

When an application starts using more memory than its allocated budget, Android can first move some of its memory pages into compressed RAM through zRAM. This can help avoid an immediate shutdown, although excessive compression may cause some slowdown or interface stuttering.

If the application continues consuming excessive memory, Android can eventually terminate the process. The idea is to stop one poorly behaved app from putting the wider system under unnecessary memory pressure.

Potential benefit for budget smartphones

Phones with smaller amounts of RAM may benefit the most from this approach. Heavy applications can put considerable pressure on available memory, particularly when several apps are running at the same time.

Rather than allowing one application to consume an excessive share of system resources, Android 17 is designed to intervene before that usage contributes to wider system instability. Google says the limits are intended to address issues such as memory leaks and other outlier behaviour that can lead to stuttering, increased battery drain and application termination.

There is a tradeoff for demanding apps

The change is not necessarily good news for every application. Games, video editing tools and other resource intensive apps may genuinely require substantial memory to operate smoothly.

If developers do not optimise their applications for the new memory environment, users could notice performance problems when an app approaches its limit. In more serious cases, Android may terminate the application after it continues exceeding the system enforced threshold.

Google is therefore encouraging developers to examine their memory usage and improve their apps before broader adoption of the feature. The company says manufacturers will increasingly use the per app memory limits across different RAM configurations over the coming year.

For everyday users, the change should mostly work in the background. The goal is not to give users another setting to manage, but to make Android better at preventing a memory hungry application from dragging down the performance of the entire phone.
