Bengaluru Indira Canteens Face Food Safety Checks After Hygiene Concerns
Food safety officials have inspected Indira Canteen kitchens across Bengaluru after finding serious hygiene concerns, including rodents and poor storage conditions.

• Indira Canteen kitchens faced food safety inspections
• Rodents were found at the Gottigere canteen
• Bengaluru officials issued a notice to the contractor
Bengaluru food safety officials have widened their inspections beyond luxury hotels and restaurants, turning their attention to Indira Canteens that serve affordable meals to thousands of people across the city. The latest inspections have raised concerns about hygiene and food handling practices inside some of the kitchens.
The inspections were carried out at several Indira Canteens, including facilities in Gottigere and Lingarajapuram. Officials examined the kitchens, food preparation areas and storage facilities while also checking commonly used ingredients such as vegetables, rice, pulses and cooking oil.
The condition of the Gottigere Indira Canteen became a particular concern during the inspection. Officials reportedly found rats and other rodents inside the kitchen area. The poor level of cleanliness prompted authorities to take immediate action, with the canteen being sealed following the inspection.
Food safety department officials said the kitchen was not being maintained in an acceptable condition. A notice was issued to the contractor responsible for operating the canteen, putting the agency under scrutiny over the condition in which food was being prepared and stored.
The inspection comes at a time when food safety authorities in Bengaluru have intensified checks across different types of food establishments. In recent inspections of high end hotels, officials had reported several violations involving expired products, improperly stored meat, poor quality vegetables and other food items that did not meet required safety standards.
The contrast is notable because Indira Canteens were introduced to provide inexpensive food, particularly benefiting workers, students and people who depend on affordable meals. Maintaining proper hygiene in these kitchens is therefore considered especially important because food prepared there is consumed by a large number of people every day.
During the latest checks, officials did not limit their attention to whether ingredients were fresh. They also examined how food was being handled and stored inside the kitchens. Proper separation of food items, cleanliness of preparation areas and the condition of storage spaces are all important parts of food safety inspections.
The department is also checking whether canteens are following basic standards for preventing contamination. Poor kitchen hygiene can create conditions in which food becomes unsafe, particularly when raw ingredients and prepared food are not handled properly.
The Gottigere action is likely to put additional pressure on contractors managing Indira Canteens in other parts of Bengaluru. Authorities are expected to continue inspections to determine whether similar problems exist elsewhere.
The latest development follows a broader enforcement drive in the city. Food safety officials recently inspected several prominent hotels and restaurants, where they found concerns ranging from expired food products to improper storage of meat and other ingredients. Some establishments were also found to have food products carrying incorrect labels or showing signs of spoilage.
Officials have now made it clear that food safety checks are not restricted to expensive restaurants or hotels. Establishments serving food at subsidised prices are also expected to meet basic hygiene and safety requirements.
For regular customers, the inspections could provide some reassurance that authorities are paying attention to the condition of kitchens where large quantities of food are prepared. At the same time, the findings highlight the need for contractors and kitchen staff to maintain cleanliness throughout the day rather than waiting for inspections.
Indira Canteens have an important role in Bengaluru’s public food system. Because the kitchens serve meals at affordable prices, even a temporary disruption can affect people who rely on them. Authorities therefore face the task of improving hygiene standards while ensuring that essential food services continue without unnecessary interruption.
The action at Gottigere also sends a clear message to other canteen operators. Maintaining a clean kitchen, protecting ingredients from pests and storing food correctly are basic responsibilities that cannot be overlooked.
The food safety department is expected to examine compliance after issuing the notice. Further action could follow if the concerned contractor fails to address the deficiencies identified during the inspection.
The recent inspections show that Bengaluru’s food safety campaign is moving across different parts of the food service sector. From premium hotels to government supported canteens, establishments preparing food for the public are increasingly coming under closer scrutiny.
