Heavy Rain Forces School Holiday in Several Karnataka Districts as Red Alert Continues

Relentless monsoon rains continue to batter several parts of Karnataka, prompting district administrations to announce holidays for schools and colleges in multiple taluks as a precautionary measure. With the India Meteorological Department forecasting continued heavy rainfall over the coming days, authorities have stepped up emergency preparedness, warning residents to remain cautious near rivers, landslide prone areas and low lying regions.

The weather situation has become particularly severe in the Malnad and coastal belts, where continuous downpours have disrupted daily life. Heavy rain has caused flooding, overflowing rivers and landslides in several locations, forcing officials to prioritize public safety. Educational institutions have been ordered to remain closed in the worst affected areas to prevent unnecessary travel during dangerous weather conditions.

Shivamogga district remains among the hardest hit regions. The district has been placed under a Red Alert following forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall. Authorities said the weather system is expected to remain active, increasing the possibility of floods, landslides and other rain related incidents over the next few days.

The seriousness of the situation became evident after a tragic landslide and retaining wall collapse in Indira Nagar of Thirthahalli claimed the lives of three members of a single family. The incident has heightened concerns across the district, with officials urging people living near vulnerable hillsides to stay alert and follow evacuation instructions if necessary.

The Tunga River has also witnessed a significant rise in water levels due to continuous rainfall in the catchment areas. As the river flows close to the danger mark in several stretches, authorities have advised residents to avoid riverbanks and flood prone locations. Local disaster management teams have been instructed to monitor water levels around the clock.

Considering these developments, educational institutions in Sagar taluk of Shivamogga district will remain closed on August 3. The holiday applies to Anganwadi centers, schools and colleges. Tahsildar Dr Pratibha issued the order after reviewing the prevailing weather conditions and consulting disaster management officials.

Along with announcing the holiday, the administration has activated a twenty four hour control room at the taluk office to respond quickly to emergencies. Residents have been requested to immediately report incidents such as flooding, fallen trees, landslides or road blockages so rescue teams can take timely action.

The monsoon has also intensified across Chikkamagaluru district, leading authorities to declare holidays for educational institutions in Koppa and Sringeri taluks. Anganwadi centers as well as primary and high schools will remain closed as a precautionary measure.

District officials have cautioned the public against venturing near the Tunga River, which is flowing above the danger level in some locations. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially through interior roads where waterlogging and landslides could create hazardous conditions.

Dakshina Kannada district is also witnessing widespread rainfall, prompting officials to declare holidays in several taluks. In the Mangaluru subdivision, Anganwadi centers and schools up to the high school level will remain closed in Mangaluru, Ullal, Moodbidri, Bantwal and Mulki taluks.

In Puttur, Belthangady, Kadaba and Sulya taluks, the holiday has been extended further, covering educational institutions from Anganwadi centers up to Pre University colleges. Authorities said the decision was taken after forecasts indicated the likelihood of continued heavy rainfall throughout the region.

Meanwhile, Uttara Kannada district has been placed under an Orange Alert. As a precautionary measure, holidays have been declared for Anganwadi centers and schools in Dandeli and Joida taluks. District authorities stated that weather conditions will continue to be monitored and additional decisions will be taken if rainfall intensifies further.

Officials emphasized that these closures are purely preventive and aimed at protecting students, teachers and school staff from potential risks caused by severe weather. Parents have also been requested not to send children outdoors unless absolutely necessary.

The southwest monsoon had initially remained weak across Karnataka during the early part of the season. However, rainfall activity strengthened considerably toward the end of July, bringing widespread showers to coastal and Malnad districts. While the rains have significantly improved water availability in reservoirs and rivers, they have simultaneously increased the risk of floods and landslides.

Meteorologists have indicated that the current weather pattern is likely to persist for the next few days. Continuous moisture flow from the Arabian Sea combined with favorable atmospheric conditions is expected to sustain heavy rainfall over several districts in western Karnataka.

Disaster management authorities are coordinating closely with local administrations to ensure rapid response in case of emergencies. Rescue teams, emergency equipment and relief personnel have been kept on standby in vulnerable areas. Officials are also monitoring rivers, reservoirs and hill slopes where the possibility of fresh landslides remains high.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors during periods of intense rainfall, avoid crossing flooded roads and keep away from swollen rivers and streams. Those living in landslide prone regions have been urged to remain alert for signs such as cracks in the ground, unusual water seepage or falling rocks, and immediately inform local authorities if they notice any danger.

Authorities have further appealed to the public to follow only official weather updates and district administration advisories instead of relying on unverified information circulating on social media. Emergency helplines have been activated in several districts to provide assistance whenever required.

As Karnataka continues to experience one of the strongest phases of this year’s monsoon, district administrations remain on high alert. While the rainfall has brought relief from earlier dry conditions and improved water resources, officials stress that public safety remains the highest priority until weather conditions begin to stabilize.
