Siddaramaiah Calls for United Karnataka Stand on Cauvery Water Dispute

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has called for political unity across party lines, stressing that issues related to the state’s land, water and language should never become subjects of political rivalry. Speaking after attending an all party meeting on the Cauvery river water dispute, he said Karnataka has a long standing democratic tradition of standing together whenever the state’s core interests are challenged.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, brought together leaders from the ruling government, opposition parties, Union ministers, senior legal experts and top officials to discuss the state’s strategy regarding the Cauvery water sharing issue. Siddaramaiah said the discussion reflected the importance of presenting a united voice while safeguarding Karnataka’s interests in one of the state’s most sensitive matters.

Addressing the media and later sharing his views on social media, Siddaramaiah emphasized that political differences should be set aside whenever questions concerning Karnataka’s land, water resources or linguistic identity arise. According to him, protecting the state’s rights should remain the highest priority regardless of which party is in power.

He pointed out that Karnataka has faced several difficult situations over the years involving inter state disputes and constitutional challenges. Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara attended the discussions along with Union Ministers V Somanna and Shobha Karandlaje. KPCC President H K Patil, state ministers Ramalinga Reddy, K J George and Krishna Byre Gowda were also present.

The meeting was further attended by Karnataka’s Special Representative in New Delhi T B Jayachandra, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R Ashoka, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy and Advocate General Shashikiran Shetty. Senior government officials and legal advisors also participated in the deliberations.

Political observers believe the gathering reflected a broader effort to build consensus on an issue that extends beyond electoral politics. Water disputes have historically required coordinated legal, administrative and political strategies, making cooperation among stakeholders particularly important.

Siddaramaiah concluded by reiterating that Karnataka’s future depends on preserving its natural resources while ensuring fair treatment under the law.
