Karnataka Cabinet Expansion Likely to Get Green Signal After Key Delhi Meeting
Congress leaders are expected to finalize Karnataka cabinet expansion after crucial Delhi discussions with the high command as attention turns to filling twenty vacant ministerial positions before the Assembly session.
The long awaited expansion of the Karnataka cabinet is expected to move a step closer as senior Congress leaders hold a series of important meetings in New Delhi. Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC President BK Hariprasad are taking part in discussions with the party leadership to finalize the long pending list of ministers.
The Congress leadership is aiming to complete the cabinet expansion before the Karnataka Assembly session begins on August 6. With 20 ministerial positions still vacant nearly two months after DK Shivakumar assumed office, the pressure has increased to complete the exercise without further delay.
A key meeting with AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the final list. The discussions, which were originally scheduled for Monday night, were postponed and are now expected to take place on Tuesday. After reviewing the proposed names, the list is likely to be sent to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi for final approval.
Sources indicate that the party is considering a balanced approach by combining experienced legislators with a larger number of fresh faces. Out of the 20 vacant ministerial posts, around 12 to 15 positions could reportedly go to new entrants. However, the term new faces does not necessarily mean first time legislators. Lawmakers who have served multiple terms and demonstrated administrative ability are also expected to receive serious consideration.
The selection process is believed to be based on several factors, including regional representation, caste balance, educational background and governance experience. Party leaders are reportedly trying to ensure that the final cabinet reflects both political balance and administrative efficiency.
Meanwhile, several Congress legislators hoping for ministerial berths have continued their lobbying efforts in New Delhi. Many aspirants remain in close contact with senior party leaders as they await the final decision from the high command.
Even if the cabinet list receives immediate approval, the swearing in ceremony could be delayed by a few days. Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot is scheduled to be away on a two day visit to Madhya Pradesh and is expected to return to Bengaluru on the night of July 30.
If the Congress leadership completes the approval process during the Delhi meetings, the oath taking ceremony could take place on July 31 after the Governor returns to the state. Party leaders are hopeful that this round of discussions will finally clear the way for the much awaited cabinet expansion, allowing the government to enter the upcoming Assembly session with a full team in place.
