Karnataka Braces for Heavy Rain as IMD Issues Alerts for Coastal and Malnad Districts
Heavy rainfall is expected across several Karnataka districts over the next two days with coastal and Malnad regions on alert while strong winds may also affect many interior areas.
The southwest monsoon is expected to regain strength across Karnataka, prompting weather authorities to issue fresh warnings for several districts. According to the latest forecast, heavy rain is likely on July 28 and 29, particularly in the coastal belt and Malnad region. Residents have also been advised to prepare for gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 50 kmph in many places.
Among the districts expected to receive the heaviest rainfall are Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru. Weather officials have indicated that these regions could witness intense showers over one or two locations during the forecast period, raising concerns about waterlogging and localized disruptions.
An Orange Alert has been issued for parts of coastal Karnataka. Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada are likely to experience widespread rainfall, while Belagavi, Dharwad and Bagalkote in north interior Karnataka are also expected to receive significant showers.
Rain activity is not expected to remain limited to the coast. Kodagu and Hassan may also witness heavy rainfall, while Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Mandya, Tumakuru, Ramanagara, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Chamarajanagar and Vijayanagara are forecast to receive moderate rain accompanied by strong winds.
The rainy conditions are expected to continue on July 29 as well. Forecasts suggest that Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada will continue to receive heavy rainfall, with Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru also remaining under the influence of intense monsoon activity. Belagavi, Dharwad, Yadgir, Raichur and Kalaburagi could also record heavy showers, while Bagalkote, Bidar, Gadag, Haveri, Koppal and Vijayapura are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall with gusty winds.
Recent rainfall data also reflects active monsoon conditions in parts of the state. During the previous 24 hours, Kollur in Udupi recorded 7 cm of rainfall, making it one of the wettest locations. Agumbe in Shivamogga received 5 cm, while Moodbidri, Sulya and Uppinangadi in Dakshina Kannada each recorded 4 cm. Bhagamandala in Kodagu and Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada received 3 cm of rainfall each.
Authorities have urged people living in districts under heavy rain alerts to remain cautious. Residents have been advised to avoid visiting rivers, streams and low lying areas unnecessarily, especially during periods of intense rainfall. People are also encouraged to stay away from weak structures and large trees when strong winds are blowing, as changing weather conditions could pose safety risks.
With the monsoon becoming more active across Karnataka, officials are closely monitoring the situation and have appealed to the public to follow weather advisories and take necessary precautions until conditions improve.
